Environmental claims that hold up

Since 27 September 2026, Germany's Unfair Competition Act (UWG) contains the new rules from Directive (EU) 2024/825.

What has changed

Generic environmental claims such as "eco-friendly" are only allowed with proof of recognised excellent environmental performance. Climate-neutrality claims based on offsetting are prohibited. Sustainability labels must be based on a certification scheme or established by public authorities.

For certified companies this means: use labels such as FSC® or PEFC correctly, word claims precisely and review your own labels critically.
